History and Standards of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Since my love of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi breed began over 20 years ago I have collected any and all books I could get my hands on about the breed. My favorites are the old books from the beginning as in when the Kennel Club ruling in 1934 giving the Pembroke and Cardigan Corgi their separate breed status.
Please bear with me as I work on this page as both Dave and I think the standard set when the breed was established in many ways should still be correct today. Our Corgis are NOT mini's they are purebred. There is no such breed as a toy Corgi or mini-Corgi. We have chosen to stay with the standard as it was in 1934 when the breed started which was a dog 11-12" height at shoulder and a weight of 22-24 lbs. This is still the standard in the European countries. The AKC standard today in the US is for a dog still 11-12" height at shoulder but now the weight has been increased to 31 lbs. We feel this makes for more bulk and longer bodies on the same frame. We prefer to keep the original standard as our guideline which makes for an athletic and healthy dog. We also strongly believe that if the breed standard keeps increasing this will cause our breed to join the Basset Hounds and Bulldogs and not be able to conceive or whelp naturally but will require AI and Cesareans to deliver.
(remember this is just our opinions expressed here).
